Here you will find a collection of information and links relating to the entry, stay and return journey of refugees from Ukraine.

Entry Journey

Switzerland helps people in need of protection who have fled Ukraine quickly and unbureaucratically. All persons who were resident in Ukraine before February 24 receive protection status S - there are no quotas! We recommend all those seeking protection to submit an application as soon as possible. To do this, you must register at a federal asylum center. But you don't have to do that today and tomorrow - you have up to 90 days to do so. After the application has been submitted, the person seeking protection has health insurance. After the protection status has been granted, the refugees are accommodated directly in the cantons, where they live in collective or private accommodation.

Below we explain the interaction between the Confederation, cantons, communes and private accommodation providers.

Canton Thurgau

The registered refugees are usually assigned to the cantons in proportion to the population. All persons - regardless of whether they are accommodated in BAZ, cantonal accommodation or private households - are transferred to the care of the refugee's canton of residence after allocation. The SEM compensates the cantons with a global flat rate of around CHF 1,500 per refugee and month. This flat rate includes the health insurance premium, for which just under CHF 400 is provided, the rent (around CHF 220) and a contribution for the professional care and support of the refugees (just under CHF 280). The remainder should cover the basic needs of the refugee for food, personal hygiene, clothes, mobile phone and other personal expenses. The cantons decide on the basis of their cantonal legislation Practice how they use the lump sum to ensure the livelihood of those seeking protection.
